The Small Engine Mechanic repairs fractional-horsepower gasoline engines used to power lawnmowers, garden tractors, and similar machines, using hand tools, locates causes of trouble, dismantles engines, using hand tools, and examines parts for defects, replaces or repairs parts, such as rings and bearings, cleans and adjusts carburetor and magneto, starts repaired engines and listens to sounds to test performance.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, service, and repair small engines used to power lawnmowers, garden tractors, and similar machines.
  • Perform repairs IAW work request and applicable equipment TMs or equivalent publications. Repairs will be IAW the maintenance request and to standards, to include estimated task times, as stated in current equipment Technical Manuals (TMs), Technical Bulletins (TBs), Modification Work Orders (MWOs), Safety of Use Messages (SOUMs), Special Technical Inspection and Repairs (STIRs), other applicable Government technical publications, or OEM equivalent publications.
  • Perform Preventative Maintenance Checks and Service (PMCS) in accordance with TM 10/20-series manuals and Lubrication Orders (LO) to include all before, during, and after checks. The contractor shall schedule PMCS and maintain DD Form 314 or automated equivalent on all equipment for which the contractor performs unit level maintenance. The contractor shall maintain the automated equivalent DD Form 314 with all required information in accordance with DA PAM 750-8.
  • Use a Logistics Information System (LIS) system to record maintenance services, repairs, and reporting for all work ordered equipment.

Skills and Qualifications


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Vocational or other postsecondary training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of U.S. Army maintenance procedures and logistics information systems.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of small engine diagnostics, service, and repair procedures.
  • Highly proficient mechanical skills.
  • High level of dexterity.
